Gerald George is the executive director of the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, a grant-making affiliate of the National Archives and Records Administration. He is attending the conference because the NHPRC is interested in promoting progress in dealing with electronic records issues and because he was requested to chair the session on "Defining Consensus." The NHPRC sponsored several pilot projects concerning electronic records in the 1980s, in 1991 supported publication of a research agenda on electronic records issues, and has subsequently funded more than 20 projects to address those issues. For the past four years, promoting electronic records R&D has been one of the priorities in the NHPRC strategic plan, and a plan revision now under review would retain that priority.
