Hardy is the National Endowment for the Arts' chief museum and visual arts expert, leading the Arts Endowment in its work with museums, visual arts organizations, and visual artists. Hardy came to the Arts Endowment in 1999 from the Salina Art Center in Salina, Kansas, where she had been Director since 1986. There she oversaw the growth of the Art Center from a small community gallery to a contemporary art center with a national and international exhibition schedule; an education program; a youth art interactive area; and a film program. Exhibitions curated by Hardy include "Interactive," a group multimedia show involving new technologies (1996). She served on the Endowment's Creation & Presentation panel for Visual Arts in 1998, and has been active on the national art scene through her professional activities with the American Federation of Arts museum directors' program, American Association of Museums, Museum Trustee Association, and Institute for Museum and Library Services. Hardy holds an M.A. in American Art from the University of Kansas. Prior to her tenure at the Salina Art Center, she held positions with the Salina Arts and Humanities Commission and the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas in Lawrence.
