Session: Heuristic Evaluation

This workshop introduces the concept and terminology associated with Web usability and heuristic evaluation of Web sites as a method of usability inspection. It provides the basic knowledge necessary to conduct a heuristic evaluation using the "Heuristics for Web Communications".

The participants of the workshop will be able to:

  • define the concept and goals of a heuristic evaluation,

  • understand how to apply the "Heuristics for Web Communications,"

  • rate usability problems detected in a heuristic evaluation,

  • conduct a heuristic evaluation of a Web site.

Requirements for participation include good knowledge of Web design and HTML.

This full day workshop will be conducted in a networked classroom at the University of Washington. Transportation from the hotel will be provided. Participation is limited to 4 groups of 4 (16 participants maximum)

Schedule:

  • Introduction to the concept of Web usability and heuristic evaluation (approx. 60 min)

  • Introduction of the "Heuristics for Web Communications" (approx. 120 min)

  • Individual heuristic evaluation of selected pages of a museum Web site (approx. 90 min)

  • Team rating of the findings (approx. 60 min)

  • Presentation of the team results (approx. 90 min)

  • Closing session (approx. 30 min)
