Cary Karp has been the Director of the Department of Information Technology at the Swedish Museum of Natural History since 1990 and is also the Director of Internet Strategy for the International Council of Museums (ICOM).

His current professional responsibilites include:

Advisor on Internet Strategy and Technology to the Collegium of Directors of the National Swedish Central Museums, CIMI Project Manager, Member of the Board of ICOM's International Documentation Committee (CIDOC), Chair of the CIDOC Internet Working Group, Chair of the ICOM Advisory Committee Internet Working Group, Member of the editorial board of Archives and Museum Informatics, Organizer of the Registry of Museum Network Resources (REMUNERE), EU designated expert on museum issues in various strategic and planning contexts within the Information Society Technology (IST) facet of the EU Fifth Framework Program, At-Large Member of The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), Independent consultant to other agencies on Internet strategy and platform architecture.

He was Curator of the musical instrument collections at the Music Museum in Stockholm from 1973 to 1990 with active participation in its conservation activities and was the museum's Deputy Director for the final ten of those years.
