Haptic Technologies for Museums and Cultural
Heritage Workshop: Haptic Technologies The concept of "Virtual Museums" is now increasing the development and acceptance of Virtual Environments (VE) technologies in the framework of cultural heritage, art, archaeology and related fields. One of the most interesting aspects of VE appliaction to museums is the exploitation of the complete opportunities offered by such a new media in terms of sensory modalities for creating innovative paradigms of interaction (fruition, knowledge retrieval, also psychological emotions kept from the artpiece) with the objects exposed. Haptic technologies have become an effective means to guarantee the physical interaction with VE and are now preliminary exploited in museums for allowing the users to perceive shapes of virtual sculptures. This half-day workshop aims to present, to an audience with a specific background in museums, an overview of all the aspects associated to haptic technolgies in order to open issues on applicability of such technologies in museums, art galleries and on the web. Specific hands-on demos will be arranged by exploiting different haptic devices developed at PERCRO. The content of the workshop can be scheduled as follows:
