Jeff Gates is Lead Producer of New Media Initatives at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Interested in the social intersection of art, technology, and museology, he proposed the Smithsonian's first blog, Eye Level (eyelevel.si.edu), for the American Art Museum. He now serves as its managing editor. His museum projects have won numerous accolades including a silver medal MUSE Award from the Association of American Museums, Best Educational Web Site from Museums and the Web, Site of the Day from USAToday, and Pick of the Day from Yahoo. In April 2004 his design and interface work was featured in Communication Arts magazine. In his off hours he is a writer and net-based artist. In 1999 he was the first In response to 9/11 he created an online storytelling project called "Dichotomy, It Was a Matter of Time and Place." This site was a finalist at the SXSW Interactive Festival. His personal writings and commentary can be found on his blog, Life Outtacontext, where, drawing on his interests in information architecture, fatherhood and social media, he has penned such articles as "Parenting's Effect on Usability Studies" and "Confessions of a Long Tail Visionary." He received his B.A. in International Relations from Michigan State University and his Master of Fine Arts Degree from UCLA in graphic design.
