Web Publication Made Easy with SGML/XML

Jorge Gustavo Rocha , Universidade do Minho, Portugal

Session: Workshop 8

With the adoption of XML by the W3 Consortium in the spring of 1998, a more suitable document format is available with a two fold objective: Web publishing and document management. In this workshop the document life cycle will be reviewed, showing suitable formats, methodologies and tools supporting document processing and archiving. Several examples will be given, ranging from simple ones suitable for illustrating the need for structured documents, to other more sophisticated strategies taking fully advantage of SGML/XML. Our main emphasis will be automatic publication on the Web, with simple transformations or with complex indexing and knowledge extraction. The presenter will also show how a simple email system can be used for archiving, indexing and announcing cultural events on the Web, without human intervention.
