Manfred Bogen has been active in the area of group communication and computer supported cooperative work since 1983. In 1987 he became head of a research group being responsible for the provision of innovative multimedia services in international Internet environments. Under his management, the value-added services for the German research community has been established between 1991 and 1993 on behalf of the DFN association (Deutsche Forschungsnetz). Between 1994 and 1997, several German broadcasters and the German Government started their Internet involvement under his direction. Manfred Bogen worked in several program committees of international networking conferences and he was the program committee chairman of the TERENA Networking Conference 1998 (TNC'98).

Manfred Bogen studied computer science at the University of Bonn and among other publications he is co-author of two books about X.400 and distributed group communication. At present, he is convenor of the TERENA working group on quality management for networking (WG-QMN) and a member of the TERENA Technical Committee. Manfred Bogen is working at GMD - the German National Research Center for Information Technology. He is the project manager for the 'Digital Beethoven House' project on behalf of GMD.
