Niklaus Buetikofer is Head of the Information Safeguarding Section 2, Swiss Federal Archives. He has a degree in history and worked with historical databases since the early 1980s at the University of Bern, Switzerland. He joined the Swiss Federal Archives in 1988 as an archivist for safeguarding, appraising and transfering machine readable data. In his present position he is now responsible for the safeguarding and transfer of all types of records.

Niklaus Buetikofer is actually involved in different efforts going on in the Swiss Federal Archives and in the Swiss Federal Government concerning record keeping and archival management of records in electronic environments. All these efforts have a common goal, to adapt existing records management principles, strategies, and practices to recent developments in the legal, organisational and technological area. Existing practices are based on a registry system with hierarchical file classification reflecting the structure of functions, activities and transactions within a single organisation. These principles have been built in electronic transaction management systems according to federal directives called GEVER-Strategy and GEVER-Data Model.
