Clare-Marie Karat
Clare-Marie Karat received her Ph.D in Social Psychology from the University of Colorado and has worked for the last fifteen years in private industry and government as a user interface designer in the development of a variety of customer solutions. Dr. Karat has published papers and contributed to several books on the topic of human factors cost-benefit analysis, usability engineering methods, universal access, personalization, and speech recognition. Dr. Karat was featured in Business Week as the author of the User's Bill of Rights for the computer industry. She is now a Research Staff Member at the IBM TJ Watson Research Center and works with leading edge customers to develop advances in human-computer interfaces for multimedia applications for the Web and customer solutions involving multimodal user interfaces. Dr Karat is co-principal investigator with Dr Andrew Sears of UMBC on an NSF project in the Universal Access program entitled "Using Speech Recognition to Enhance Communication Capabilities for Individuals with Disabilities".
