Robert Meersman is full professor at VUB Computer Science Department since end of 1994, Director of its new Laboratory for System Technology and Applications Research (STARLab). Before that, he was a full professor at the University of Tilburg where he led the computer science laboratory (INFOLAB) specialized in database-related research. He was a past Chairman of IFIP WG 2.6 (Database), current Chairman of IFIP Technical Committee TC12 (Artificial Intelligence). He was responsible for Tilburg U. for the ESPRIT projects SPRITE on document management, ISCORE I and II (BRA-s), involved in NoE-s on Machine Learning and Logic Programming, and for the RIDL* project that led to the industrial spin-off of a new generation of innovative CASE tools. Responsible for VUB for the ESPRIT projects Web for Schools on large scale Internet installation and community building for the educational sector, TREVI on high volume text retrieval and enrichment systems for vital information and TELEMATICS project HyperMuseum on bringing European Museums onto the Internet. The organizer and/or Program Chair of the Data Semantics conference series (DS-1 to -6), Professor Meersman has also been keynote speaker and invited lecturer at many international conferences as well as author of many scientific articles in journals and proceedings.
