Museums and the Web 2003: Best of the Web
Recognizing achievement in heritage Web site design

Best Museum Web Site Supporting Educational Use

And the Winner is:

Campfire Stories with George Catlin
http://catlinclassroom.si.edu

Judges Comments:

The "Campfire Stories with George Catlin" is a good example of how art museum collections can be interpreted online for use by teachers in their classrooms. This collection, in particular, has strong cross-curricular connections and has been presented for teachers to use in thematic activities.

In theory, the "virtual community" is good idea...especially metaphorically because today's chat rooms are like the campfire....a warm, dark space where stories can be told.

The site is extremely attentive to classroom needs, with extensive lesson plans and connections to standards.

Innovative presentation of an artist good depth of information, pleasing design

The interactive component which plays a major role in any educational process seems here to be at its highest development.

I like the non-linear aspect of this site as it allows you to link/connect one object or artifact to another. It is a good resource; I would like to see more guidance in the Teacher section about how to best use this resource.
