Halvorson is a graduate of the University of North Dakota and Montana State University, and from 1987 to 1990 worked for the South Dakota State Historical Society. He joined the State Historical Society of North Dakota (SHSND) in March 1990 and as Curator of Collections has written and co-produced exhibits for the main and branch museums of the SHSND and county-local-tribal museums. He is the writer and co-producer on No Two Horns: A Gallery of Art and Exploits.
