Demonstration: Demonstrations - Session 2

This demonstration takes a behind-the-scenes look at the production of "The Living Room Candidate," a broadband online exhibition from the Museum of the Moving Image that allows its visitors multiple methods of navigation through fifty years of historical and present day presidential campaign advertisements.

Working with a small staff and very little funding, the Museum was able to create and implement this video-based online experience that has, since July 2004, seen over 400,000 unique visitors.

Discussed will be both pactical and intellectual issues such as

  • methods and standards for digitizing, compressing, and serving video-based artifactual material;
  • use of open-source/open license software to make web-based cataloguing and content management tools that both undergird the public site AND serve as tools/resources for Museum staff;
  • copyright and permissions issues
  • function of museum as 'cultural front-end' that connects archives to audiences.
