Taxonomies Of New Media Art – Real World NamingsBeryl Graham, University of Sunderland, United Kingdom Session: New Media / Art This paper provides an outline of current taxonomies, categories and critical vocabularies for new media art or digital art. The examples are drawn from real-world art contexts, including the new-media curating discussion list. The relationships between namings and the practical considerations of funding and institutional roles of arts institutions are examined. Particular institutions include San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and artworks include University of Openess [sic]. Conclusions on useful taxonomies include the characteristics of Interactivity, Connectivity, and Computability (Dietz), and "Medium-Independent Behaviours" (Variable Media). |
