Virtual Silver Screen

Virtual Silver Screen is a an online movie theatre developed by Library and Archives Canada. Visitors to the Virtual Silver Screen will engage in a complete theatrical experience from their desktop, where the navigation and presentation emulate the early experience of silent films and 'talkies'. The majority of the films are drawn from the early part of the 20th century and have been grouped together under four themes: Canada at War, Agriculture and Industry, Scenic Canada, and Snapshots of Canadian Life.

While numerous archival texts, art works and maps are available online, there are limited audio-visual records to be found in a digital format on the web. Historical film is a useful tool as it provides a visual record of past events. Virtual Silver Screen promotes the use of film, not only as an illustration, but as another important medium for understanding Canadian life and times.
