Andrew Sawyer was awarded his PhD for research into the role of sixteenth-century political prints in the early Dutch Republic, based on collections in the Netherlands, and using an object-oriented database/image analysis system. Working with mwr (an online publisher specialising in museum content and education), he has established research projects combining museum, academic and commercial expertise. These have covered e-learning and museums, the sustainability of public facing digital assets, and implementing digital labels in-gallery. He is currently seeking to explore the creation and management of Learning Objects (modular, interchangeable, reusable and reversionable digital assets used in learning contexts), based on museum and gallery content. He is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Leicester's Department of Museum Studies, and has published on the development of digital media in the museum sector, most recently (with R. Parry), 'Space and the machine: adaptive museums, pervasive technology and the new gallery environment' in S. MacLeod (Ed.), Reshaping Museum Space: Architecture, Design, Exhibitions (Routledge: London and New York, 2005); he has also presented several papers, most recently 'Museums, galleries and the new digital media - mapping some emerging strategies and their implications', at the Art History Seminar, Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (13th October 2004).
