Workshops: Description

Interaction Design for Museums on the Web

Frankie Roberto, Rattle, United Kingdom

This half-day workshop will assume you're already convinced of the value of on-line social tools, and will look at how you can actually design social interactions for your Web site that work, from simple calls-to-action to fully-fledged on-line communities.

This will be a hands-on workshop, where participants will learn the best design patterns and techniques, and then practice putting these into action, to come away with ideas and inspiration.

Topics covered in the workshop will include:

  • Creating the proposition - who, what, where, when, how, why?
  • 'User generated content' - what kind of content, which users, and will they bother?
  • Learning to love the niche - why loving the minority is good for the majority.
  • Blogs vs wikis vs forums vs competitions vs votes... - 'standard' interaction design patterns and when to use them (and when not to).
  • The '1% rule' of participation - is really that fixed? And can you increase it?
  • Wording calls-to-action - why the little words make a big difference.
  • Influencing behaviour - tipping the balance of positive vs negative contributions through design, without heavy-handed moderation.
  • Licensing and re-use - who's content is it anyway? Aligning licensing frameworks with user expectations.
  • Competition vs collaboration - different modes of participation, and what they're good for.
  • Incentives: psychological and monetary - understanding the motivations for contribution, and designing incentives that aren't out-and-out bribes.
  • Designing better forms - They are the core interface of the interactive web, but they've come a long way, and can now be more usable and playful than ever.

This workshop is for anyone who has to produce engaging on-line museum experiences, and doesn't require any technical knowledge or design expertise. Participants are invited to bring along real on-line problems and opportunities, and the exercises will be tailored to the participant's institutions.
