10:00 am - 3:00 pm

Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, The Provincial Museum of Alberta has twelve curatorial programs in Human and Natural History, with over 2 million items in its collections. Last year, the Museum attracted over 300,000 visitors, making it one of the five most popular museums in Canada. The Provincial Museum of Alberta's WWW presentation has now been on-line for eighteen months (September '96 - February 98). The presentation is extensive, over 400 pages, and was designed to showcase the Museum's exhibits and programs, and provide detailed information on curatorial activities. At the outset, it was intended to appeal to four main groups of virtual visitors:
  • local people seeking information about exhibits and events;
  • teachers and educators looking for curriculum-related programs and related resource materials;
  • tourists and visitors planning a trip to Edmonton and Alberta;
  • scholars and professionals looking for detailed information in their research areas and contact with Curators.
The available evidence, from log-files, e-mail messages and other feedback, suggests that the Museum's WWW presentation has been successful in reaching its targeted readers in its first months of operation.
