MusInfo is a comprehensive information system designed to meet the documentation
requirements for the collections of Geneva's museums and scientific
institutions. These collections cover a wide spectrum: everything from
natural history, archaeology and fine arts to scientific instruments
and clocks. The system was designed using an Object-Relational approach,
a compromise solution based on object-oriented concepts and relational
technology. The system uses a three-tier client-server architecture
using internet protocols and allows consultation, research, data entry
and data export. A Web browser such as Netscape is the only element
which needs to be installed on the client. This approach offers advantages
of cross-platform compatibility, multi-media presentation, low maintenance
and easy remote access; and opens up the possibility of shared databases
resources with easy public access. The presentation shows the applications
developed for the Musées d'art et d'histoire using a direct internet
link.
At present, access to the production version of MusInfo is restricted.
However, a prototype is accessible at
http://www.ville-ge.ch/musinfo/mahg/CONNECT.HTM. Connect using
Public/Public.
