The Archaeological Research Tool for Independent Cultural Exploration
(A.R.T.I.F.I.C.E) is a national joint project of a consortium consisting
of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, the York Region Board of Education
and Digital Renaissance. Participating members include museums, cultural
organizations and educational institutions across the country(Canadian
Broadcasting Corporation, The National Archives, Ministries of Education,
Museum of Anthropology at UBC, Glenbow, Manitoba Museum of Man and Nature,
Winnipeg Art Gallery, Royal Ontario Museum, Nova Scotia Museum, the
Art Gallery of Nova Scotia). The project's primary objective is to deepen
and expand students' understanding of 20th century Canada. The application's
design allows user to interact with, and to make connections between,
art/museum collections and society throughout the 20th century. Artifice
contains three major components for delivery across a variety of platforms:
web site, hybrid CD-Rom, and textual materials. An enhanced prototype
has been developed for testing and proof of concept, production is currently
underway for the completed project which will be available for distribution
in September/1998.
