Ian Russell
Ian Russell is a UK-based science centre specialist and 'hands-on' consultant,
living in Derbyshire. After an early background in teaching, marine
biology and public aquariums, he has been actively involved in the European
science centre scene for over ten years. He has personally developed
several 'classical' hands-on science centres, including Great Explorations
which is currently moving from Liverpool to assume a new identity in
Sheffield. As a biologist, he is also interested in finding new interactive
ways of presenting environmental subjects, as seen at Earthquest in
Portrush, Northern Ireland, and the Discovery Centre at Cleethorpes.
With respect to information and communication technology, he tends to
disagree with those who say, 'the medium is the message'. He is currently
considering how to make best practical use of the Internet and intranets
in interactive exhibitions. Ian doesn't always believe in taking things
too seriously, however, and likes to keep in touch with the public mind
through frequent performances of his popular Exploding Custard show
of do-it-yourself kitchen-table science experiments.
Ian will present 'Symmetrical
transactions' through the Web in the Online Discussions.
