Murtha Baca holds a Ph.D. in Art History and Italian Literature from the University of California at Los Angeles. She joined the Getty Information Institute, where she is Senior Editor in the Vocabulary Program, in 1988. In addition to numerous translations, her publications include the Union List of Artist Names (co-editor with James M. Bower, G.K. Hall, 1994), and ÒFrom Authority File to Retrieval Tool: the Union List of Artist NamesÓ (Computers and the History of Art journal, 1997). She oversaw the production and publication of the hypertext document of the Categories for the Description of Works of Art, and co-edited, with Patricia Harpring, a special double issue of the journal Visual Resources (vol. XI, nos. 3Ð4, 1996)) devoted to the Categories. She represents the Getty Information Institute as a member of the International Terminology Working group, which is preparing a multilingual lexicon of religious objects for release in 1997 on CD-ROM, in print, and on the World Wide Web.
