Immersive Histories: Interactive Storytelling

Thom Gillespie , Indiana University, USA

Session: Immersive Histories

This is a session for people with stories to tell. The issue is where and how to tell them - in a book, in a museum, on film or video, on air with audio, as a game or encyclopedia on a CD/DVD, on the Internet or everywhere, all at once with the added ingredient of interactivity which drastically changes the role of both the author and the audience or the 'interactor'. This session is not about hardware and software per se (though these will be discussed) but about the art of storytelling for the new medium. The session will be divided into two parts:

  • First, we'll take an extended look at existing projects such as Improv,

Brutus, Alice, Oz, the Erazzmatron, storySpace and games and the future

    possibilities these technologies suggest.

  • Secondly, we'll review the design and development of a design document

    for a project.
