Art Museum Image Consortium (AMICO): A User interacts with a rich image database

David L. Austin , University of Illinois at Chicago, USA

Session: Educational Users

Twenty-five members of the Association of Art Museum Directors form the Art Museum Network, an organization formed to investigate the possibilities of enabling educational use of digital images and their related records. The institutions contributed high quality, in-house images produced in accordance with a set of pre-determined standards. The resultant images constitute a library of digital resources appropriate for testing the feasibility of educational licensing. The organizers then invited universities and institutions of higher education to become testbed partners in the investigation.

The University of Illinois, with campuses in both Chicago and Urbana-Champaign, successfully competed to become one of seventeen such partners. Members of the testbed agreed to provide access to the AMICO library and track the responses of members of the university community. At the close of the first year it is possible to construct a summary of the interactions of constituents of the testbed and the AMICO Library.

The presentation will demonstrate the AMICO Library, its functionality, and its rich documentation. The paper focuses not only on one partner's reaction, but attempts to summarize the activities of its colleagues at other institutions.
