Museum Website 101

Jonathan Bowen, South Bank University, UK

Session: Museum Web 101

Not done it yourself? Maybe you never really will, but have to hire or supervise someone who will? In any case, you want to get a little taste...

This workshop will provide details of how to write World Wide Web pages, particularly in a museum context. A basic session on HTML (HyperText Markup Language) will be given, together with hints on structuring and linking web pages to aid navigation, and tips on Web page design to improve appearance and speed up loading over the network.

A simple but useful subset of HTML, hyperlinks and graphics will be covered in detail. Practical tips on using some more advanced features available for use in the implementation of websites. Potential uses for museum websites will be suggested, with the aim being to help and interest the virtual visitor as much as possible. The following technical aspects will be considered: tables, frames, image maps, forms, metadata for search engines, multimedia, JavaScript, Java and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS).

Suitable for those with basic computer skills but with no experience of creating web pages. You will have a first experience of creating a small set of connected Web pages and get knowledge of more advanced features that could be added.
