Developing Information Policies for the Web

Michael Shapiro, USA

Session: Information Policy for the Web

This workshop will address cultural organizations as both providers and users of information in the networked environment, exploring emerging legal principles and the best place to ground them organizationally. It will provide a step-by-step approach for institutions of higher education, museums, and other cultural organizations that are considering developing, reviewing or revising existing policies and management guidelines to take into account new issues arising from electronic information. Topics for lecture and discussion include drafting the statements of purpose and values; access to information; electronic mail; privacy (including recent developments within the European Union and at the U.S. Federal Trade Commission); the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) "safe harbor" provisions; and enforcement and due process issues. Major subjects will include Cultural Organizations, Information Policy Introduction, Access Issues, Electronic Mail, Privacy, Websites and Publishing, Network Issues, Enforcement and Implementation and Review.
