The National Maritime Museum's Search Station ProjectSophia Robertson, National Maritime Museum, United KingdomSession: Demo Session 2 The Search Station is a collections resource providing thematic access to over 1800 objects from the National Maritime Museum's collections. Initially opened to the public in-house in April 1999, an online version of the Search Station was launched in December 1999 which virtually replicated the entire in-house system. Both systems were produced in relatively short time periods with limited resources, and both made use of the web and web technologies to collect and deliver content. Two versions of the web site are currently available: a text and images only site, and an enhanced site that includes many Search Station features produced using Flash, Shockwave and streamed audio. Both in-house and online versions of the Search Station were produced from a single set of databases, providing a flexible and scalable system which can be updated and extended by the Museum staff themselves. In this respect, the Search Station can be viewed not only as a web site but also as a web publishing system. The source databases, key tools and unique features of the Search Station will be shown in this demonstration. |
