Best of the Web

Best Site Overall!

Winner:

State Hermitage Museum

http://www.hermitagemuseum.org

I like this site overall, but it provided limited access for disabled and low-bandwidth users. With its clean graphics, good navigation, innovative uses of new technology, searchable collections on-line, zoom on high resolution graphics it shows the best of web design. Future enhancements could include more on-line educational activities.--Jim Angus

Outstanding site, full of pertinent information about the collections, their place within the Hermitage structure, and the place of both museum and objects in history. The sponsorship with IBM has brought all types of technology to bear in the site: high quality zoom on images, 'Query By Image Content' (QBIC) searching, virtual tours using video, etc. They have provided extensive details for visitors to get a sense of what is on offer. (I appreciated the 'Collection Status' info. saying what galleries are closed during a given time.) -- Frances Lloyd-Baynes

The images on this site are truly amazing quality and download rapidly enough. site is visually very attractive and full of very important information. I appreciate not having to download the plug-ins, but it still takes far too long for the applets to load. With this kind of technological partnership, museums can accomplish something really impressive. It would be great if more museums could benefit. --Lorna Abungu

The only site that was rated as in the top ten finalists by all of the judges.
