The Wall of Respect was an outdoor mural created in 1967 on the South Side of Chicago by a group of artists from the Organization for Black American Culture. The initial theme of the mural was “Black Heroes,” chosen in part by members of the local community. Some sections of the mural were later repainted to reflect changes in the Civil Rights Movement. In early 1971 the mural was partially damaged by a fire and demolished. The website not only preserves the mural, it also replicates the mural’s function as an educational tool for audiences interested in the history and culture of African Americans and the Civil Rights movement. One of the challenges was creating a website that would be accessible to a large number of computer users, especially local institutions such as the DuSable Museum of African American Art and the Chicago Public Schools.
