Session: Streaming Audio and Video

Streaming Audio and Video provide opportunities for museums to reach Internet users in new ways. Compelling media-rich Web sites or live Webcasts can extend the museum floor and help institutions reach new audiences.

This workshop will explain how streaming audio and video works, examine the three major formats (RealMedia, QuickTime, and Windows Media), and explore how museums (and others) are using this exciting new medium. The workshop will examine the differences between creating "on demand" video and audio clips and "Webcasting" live. Examples from past Webcasts and online exhibitions will be presented.

In addition, capturing, editing, and encoding of digital video will be demonstrated. The tools and some basic authoring techniques will be explored. Finally, the future of streaming audio and video will be examined. Broadband connections and other emerging technologies will be discussed.
