The Library of Congress interactive exhibit, Churchill and the Great Republic, examines the life and career of Winston Spencer Churchill and emphasizes his lifelong links with the United States--the nation he called "the great Republic."
Churchill and the Great Republic draws on the unparalleled collection of Churchill materials in the Churchill Archives Centre in Cambridge, England. This is the first time that these materials are exhibited comprehensively in the United States. The exhibition also showcases the remarkable holdings on Churchill and his life in the Library of Congress. A number of items, drawn from the rich, multi-format collections of the Library, are newly uncovered and have never been displayed previously.
Highlights of the experience include an interactive timeline, animated artifact commentaries by the curator, a searchable gallery with over 200 objects related to Churchill, and thematic interpretations. These themes include Churchill as a politician, warrior for empire, and great communicator. Also explored is his relationship to American presidents and his role in World War II and the cold war.
Recordings of some of Churchill's most important and profound speeches are available for visitors to discover. An audio highlights tour given by the curator is another means of exploration of the vast material represented in the exhibition. The interactive exhibit offers various paths of self exploration that appeal to a wide variety of visitors from the casual surfer to the advanced scholar.
