Esther de la Herrán earned her degree in History from Universidad Iberoamericana. She began working as a researcher for the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes (INBA) in 1974, she has been Director of the Centro de Documentación e Información de Artes Plásticas, of the Pinacoteca Virreinal de San Diego (intern), Subdirector of Documentación de las Artes, director of Investigación y Documentación de las Artes, subdirector of Museo Nacional de Arte and executive coordinator of the proyects: Munal 2000 and Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo de la UNAM
She has been in charge at Palacio de Bellas Artes (1974-1979) of the exhibits programs, promoter of organization and preserver of the artistic documentation heritage and responsible of the digitalization of the artistic information in colaboration with the Universidad de Colima and the Programa Editorial de los Centros Nacionales de Investigación, Documentación e Información en música, teatro, danza y artes plásticas from 1985 to 1992.
She has been member of the Consejo de Asesores de la Dirección de Artes Plásticas from 1977 to 1979 , of the Consejo de la Investigación Artística from 1985 to 1992 and of the Seminario de Estudios de la Cultura del Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (CONACULTA) from 1987 to 1994. In 1985 she received an honorific mention in the Premio Nacional de Administración Pública.
