Constantinos J. Dallas

Costis Dallas has a degree in history from the University of Ioannina, and MPhil and doctoral degrees in Classical archaeology from the University of Oxford. His publications and research interests concern archaeological classification, the formal representation of cultural information, museum communication and the new media, and the social semiotics of Classical Greek art and iconography. As Head of Documentation at the Benaki Museum (1990-94), Costis participated in several cultural informatics projects, including the development of the "Sacred Way" pilot CD-I disc and the MITOS museum information system, based on CLIO, an application of an innovative semantic modeling approach to cultural information.

In 1994-1995, he became General Director of the Foundation of the Hellenic World, where he worked on the definition of concepts for an innovative documentary museum on Hellenic culture, based on information technology, audio-visual media and new approaches to interpretation. From 1993 to 1995 he served as Chair of the Multimedia Working Group of the ICOM International Documentation Committee (CIDOC).

In 1996, Costis was appointed to serve as Special Secretary for Libraries, Historical Archives, Educational Broadcasting and Instructional Materials in the Hellenic Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs; he was involved, among other things, in initiating the process for the creation of a New National Library, in supporting and modernising public libraries, and in developing the framework for the creation of a European Centre for Classical Education, a Greek proposal for the promotion of the common cultural heritage of Classical antiquity in the context of the European Union.. He is currently a Visiting Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science of the University of Crete, teaching science students an "Introduction to Classical Civilisation", a first level course supported by information technology. He is, also, Special Advisor on cultural and information issues to the Alternate Minister George Papandreou, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic, an external research associate of the Institute of Computer Science (ICS/FORTH) in the field of cultural information systems, an active member of the Documentation Standards Working Group of CIDOC/ICOM, and an editor of Archives and Museum Informatics, Cultural Heritage Informatics Quarterly.
