Exploring Amistad: Telling the Amistad Story through Original Documents and Images

Guy Hermann, Mystic Seaport Museum

Demonstrations
Saturday, April 25, 1998
10:00 am - 3:00 pm

"Exploring Amistad" brings together documents, images, and contextual materials from many diverse collections to provide a centralized, topic-focused, point-of-access for research, teaching, and discussion about the Amistad incident. Because Mystic Seaport owns little original Amistad material, the project has forced us to find solutions to complex copyright, cataloging, community relations, and presentation issues. The traffic generated by the media blitz surrounding the film has added significant technical challenges to the project as well. In the demonstration, we will discuss some of the solutions we have found and the challenges we still face.
