Rings of Passion: How the Web can trump realitySteve Mencher , Mensch Media, USANina Tovish , Lucid Design, USA http://cgi.pbs.org/ringsofpassion Session: Demonstrations 2 The ideas for the Rings of Passion Web site (http://www.pbs.org/ringsofpassion) came directly out of Museums and the Web 98, so I thought it only fitting to report back to MW99 about the process and the execution of this experiment. The site started life as an exhibition created by National Gallery of Art Director Emeritus J. Carter Brown. What made this Internet project particularly compelling was that the exhibition which provided the raw material for the Web site had been pronounced a failure by many of the country's major newspapers and magazines of record. Using the concept of One Big Idea, we decided that a new and fruitful way to get people directly involved in the action was to allow them to participate as equals in the creation of the site. It seemed, then, that we had a chance to redeem the basic ideas and concepts of the exhibition, which clearly had a great deal of value. |
