Session: Demonstrations 2

In 1997 the New Britain Museum of American Art, thanks to a substantial grant from the Henry R. Luce Foundation of New York city, decided to expand on the Museum's existing website with an educational component based on the renowned Thomas Hart Benton mural series, "Arts of Life in America."

This demonstration will include a step-by-step examination of identifying the Benton mural series as our highlighted object within a vast and inclusive collection of American art. The series, completed in the 1930's was finally selected for an intensive exploration of all aspects of the Depression era as well as its formalistic concerns. A discussion of the long distance collaborative process between the museum and Cognitive Applications (Brighton England) who served as consultants, is an interesting journey and one that bears documenting for other museums who may be pursuing this course in the future.
