Nancy Hechinger

Nancy Hechinger is the Director of the National Center for Science Literacy, Education, and Technology at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. The National Center is an education initiative of the Museum established in 1997 to advance science literacy for all Americans. It develops educational materials, programs, and activities that capture the scientific resources and spirit of the Museum, makes science more accessible, and promotes the teaching and learning of essential twenty-first-century skills. Its efforts are directed at audiences of all ages and in all places (homes, schools, libraries, planetaria, science centers, colleges and universities, and community-based organizations), and take advantage of the power of information and telecommunications technologies.

Ms. Hechinger has a diverse background in education -- including multimedia and film production, the development of interactive museum exhibits, and publishing-- and in the strategic uses of information and telecommunication technologies. A founding partner of The Edison Project, a private company that manages public schools using a comprehensive new school design with technology at its core, Ms. Hechinger served from 1992 through 1995 as the Project's director of technology. In 1995 she founded Pantecha, Inc., a business -to business consultant on education and technology. Ms. Hechinger lectures widely at schools and to education and public-policy groups about the potential of technology to enhance education and inspire children to learn. She received her B.A. in 1969 from Sarah Lawrence College.
