The son of a toolmaker, he attended a local grammar school and then read geology and geography at Exeter University. After a taking a postgraduate teaching certificate course in Liverpool, he was lucky enough to gain a place on the Leicester University Museum Studies course, to train for his profession of preference. After a 18 months at Wollaton Hall Natural History Museum, Nottingham, Alan spent 11 years as Keeper of Natural History at Bolton Museum, with particular responsibility for the geology collection. He studied for a Masters Degree in History of Science during his tenure at Bolton, researching the life and work of a local palaeo-botanist. In 1986 he moved to Guernsey Museum, as the first full-time curator of a substantial 19th century natural history collection. The need to document this collection led to his introduction of the first computer at Guernsey Museum, followed by an ever increasing responsibility for the institution's documentation and IT systems.
