Session: 5.3 3D Cooperative Environments for the Web
Collaborative Virtual Environments are a class of networking applications that support collaboration between remote users by graphically represent a common spatial environment using 3D graphics, is updated in real time to reflect the actions and the movements of each of the participants.
While these applications are getting rather common in gaming, military, and engineering contexts, interestings results are obtained by the use of these technologies for virtual exhibitions and representation of cultural contents. This tutorial explains the rationale - both on the technical and applicative sides - behind Collaborative Virtual Environments, showing with a wealth of real case studies how this technology has been applied to museums in various research projects- and with which results. Attendees will learn how a Collaborative 3D Environment for a Cultural Heritage application can be designed and deployed, and which are the basic enabling technologies that can be used. It will be also possible to try hands-on to experience navigation of cultural contents in such environments.
