Laurence des Cars is a curator in the Musée d'Orsay. She graduated at the Ecole du Louvre and the Université Paris IV. She is a former student of the École Nationale du Patrimoine and a specialist of late nineteenth-century painting. She has been the curator of the following exhibitions: L'Origine du Monde, around a Masterpiece by Courbet (Musée d'Orsay, 1996); Jean-Paul Laurens, History Painting (Musée d'Orsay, Musée des Grands Augustins in Toulouse, 1997-1998) Edward Burne-Jones, an English Master of teh Imaginary (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Birmingham Museum, Musée d'Orsay, 1998-1999) and Courbet and the Paris Commune (March 13- June 11, 2000, Musée d'Orsay), and she contributed to the catalogues published on these occasions.
In 1999, she has published The Pre-Raphaelites, an English Approach to Modernism, Gallimard / RMN edition, Découvertes Collection (American and British editions published in 2000 by Abrams and Thames & Hudson). Within the curatorial department of the Musée d'Orsay, she is in charge of the co-ordination and administration of documentary databases and in particular Base Orsay.
