Peter Walsh is a graduate of Oberlin College and studied art history and design at Harvard University, where he was awarded a master's degree in 1985. At Harvard, he served in a variety of positions including director of exhibitions and education at the Museum of Comparative Zoology and director of information and publications at the Harvard University Art Museums (comprising the Fogg, Busch-Reisinger, and Sackler Museums). He served on the staff of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, prior to joining, in 1994, the Davis Museum Cultural Center, Wellesley College, where he is currently director of information and institutional relations. He is also chairman of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Art Commission and a founding organizer of the Art Museum Image Consortium (AMICO).

Walsh writes on issues of copyright, the impact of technology on culture and the media, and art and society and speaks frequently at national and international conferences in the United States and Great Britain. Recent publications include "Museums and Copyright: A Hidden Dilemma," Visual Resources, 1996; "The Web and the Unassailable Voice," Archives and Museum Informatics, 1997, "The Coy Copy," forthcoming in a collection edited by Robert A. Baron, and "The Headless Curator," forthcoming in the journal of CHArt, published by Oxford University Press. He has contributed to books published by Alfred Knopf, Gordon & Breach, and the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University and is at work on a book on the role of technology in creating visual cultures. Current curatorial projects include contributions to The Shock of the View: Artists, Audiences, and Museums in the Digital Age, 1998-99, organized by the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis in conjunction with the Davis Museum and Cultural Center and the San Jose Museum of Art, and organizing the "Gallery Investigation" The Secret Gallery: Hidden Stories of the Collection at the Davis Museum in the fall of 1998.

A contributing editor and writer to Museums Boston and Museums New York, Walsh has been an art and architectural book critic for The Boston Phoenix and has written for such publications as The Boston Globe, The Harvard Gazette, Boston Review, Sculpture Magazine, Visual Resources, and Art New England. His views on art, politics, and new media have been discussed or quoted in Boston Magazine, The Washington Post, and the electronic edition of the New York Times.

Walsh is a member of the Intellectual Property Committee of the College Art Association and is or has been a consultant to a variety of organizations including the Harvard University Museums of Natural History; the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University; Boston Zoological Society; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Dartmouth College; The Boston Foundation; Academic Press; and the Massachusetts Council on the Arts and Humanities.
