Flavia Sparacino is a researcher at the MIT Media Lab. She designs interactive architectural environments using sensors, statistical mathematical models, multimedia, and 3D graphics. Her research models perceptual intelligence for interactive media, with applications to augmented performance, information architecture, and museum space design. Her work was featured at Ars Electronica 97 and 98, ISEA 97, SIGGRAPH 96 and 99, ICMCS 99, ICHIM99, Imagina 99 and 2000, as well as many other international venues. Amongst her creations are: Dance Space, Improvisational Theater Space, City of News and Participative City of News, Responsive Portraits, the Unbuilt Ruins interactive table, Virtual Studio:Digital Circus, Wearable Cinema/Wearable City, and the Museum Wearable. Flavia holds undergraduate degrees in electrical engineering and robotics, masters in cognitive sciences and media arts and sciences, and a PhD from the MIT Media Lab. She received a number of scholarships and awards for her academic work and career including ones from the European Community, the Italian Center for National Research, the French Center for National Research and Fulbright, among others. She spent some time in Film School, Theater School, a small town circus, and done travel photography in many countries around the world. An Italian born, she was recently nominated Knight of the Republic of Italy, by the Italian president Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, for her contributions to art and technology.
