Architecture: In 1991 Andrew Davies was accepted to the graduate program in Architecture at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI Arc) in Los Angeles. During his education at SCI Arc he was asked to submit his work to the school’s archives in his first and third year. In his final year at SCI Arc he continued to explore his interest in working in three dimensions by learning 3D computer software programs that had recently been implemented at the school. Using these new technological tools he explored the possibilities of designing in a 3D virtual world. Digital Media: Upon graduating in 1995 Davies moved to New York to work for a company called Digital Architecture that specialized in computer 3D Modeling and rendering. In 1997 Davies established his own company call Real-Time Design that provided computer modeling, rendering and animation to the interactive new media industry. Davies also did work for the motion picture industry on the film Starship Troopers. Exhibition Design: With the interest of using both his education in Architecture and Art, Davies accepted a position at the Museum of Modern Art in the department of Exhibition Design and Production. While working for MoMA he was able to continue to exploring design for both the physical gallery spaces of the museum as well as the virtual space of it’s website. Along with fulfilling his responsibilities as an exhibition designer, Davies worked in collaboration with the New Media Department to establish several interactive kiosk installations within the Museum. He also assisted the New Media department on special interactive 3D components for the Museum’s Website. Experience Design: In 1999 Davies played a pivotal role as Designer and Producer of the MoMA interactive table for the exhibition entitled the Un-Private House curated by Terence Riley. The table was a collaboration between the Museum and the MIT Media lab. This table established a new level of interactive experience for the Museums visitors and was well received as an added source of information to the exhibition. Davies co-authored a paper on his experience of working on the interactive table, which was presented at the International Cultural Heritage Informatics Meeting in Washington, D.C. 1999 The MoMA interactive table received a silver medal award from ID magazine and is featured in their June issue Interactive Media Design Review Winners 2000. Current Work: Under the recently established company Andrew Davies Design, Davies continues to use his education and experience in Art, Architecture and New Media to explore the overlap between the physical and virtual world that we live in. He is currently collaborating with Small Design on three permanent interactive environments for the lobby of the newly renovated Asia Society. These environments will be unveiled during reopening of the Asia Society in the fall of 2001 and will incorporate Davies ideas of digitally enhanced Architecture. He continues to explore new technologies that will allow high level content to be accessed through intuitive interactive interfaces. Teaching: Davies will be teaching a 3D printing course this winter using the latest in 3D modeling and rapid prototyping equipment. The course will be held at Eyebeam Atelier a non-profit new media Atelier created to support emerging new media Art. Eyebeam is currently in the process of building New York’s first New Media Museum. The Museum will include galleries, studios, workshops, a theater and classrooms.
