Workshop
Wednesday, April 22, 1998
9:00 am - 12:30 pm
This workshop will take a broad look at Intranets in museums. We will
begin by asking "Why Intranets?" and will provide specific reasons which
can be used to build a strong case for an Intranet at participant's
museums. We will then look at specific Intranet tools and techniques
including server options, network requirements, database CGIs, conferencing
tools, and other methods for facilitating access and communication.
This section includes a close look at several successful museum Intranets
and a discussion of the issues Next, we turn to a discussion of strategies
specific to implementing Intranets in participant museums: Where would
Intranet tools be most valuable? What resources can be brought to bear?
Which tools are most appropriate? Who should be involved? Participants
will leave the workshop with a clear sense of the whys and how's of
intranets and a beginning strategy for implementing their own Intranet.
The workshop is appropriate for those thinking about intranets as well
as those who have already begun their Intranets and are looking for
new ideas and approaches.
