Is the Web a Communication Tool or Digital Disneyland for Art Works?

Perttu Rastas , Contemporary Art Museum, Finland

Session: Curating Online: Beyond Exhibition

The Net is different from the Web. The Net is a communication tool and also a social space for people to meet art and artists and also to build virtual communities of their own. The Web is a narrow, 'upside-down', broadcast media for showing art works and texts about art. In this talk media curator Mr. Perttu Rastas from Kiasma, Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki, will explore different historical and practical examples of how Net-based and Web-based networking are different and what similarities they have. In his talk, Mr. Rastas will also point out how artists have been pioneers and futurists in their critical understanding of the social and cultural relations in so- called 'information societies'.
