Museums and the Web 2002: Best of the Web
Recognizing achievement in heritage Web site design

Best Innovative or Experimental Application

And the Winner was:

Natuurhistorisch Museum Maastricht
http://www.nhmmaastricht.nl

Judges Comments:

For natural history content this represents distinctly innovative thinking about presentation. I found it to be a very engaging exploration experience for learning about the natural world. This site appeals to learners on many levels. The thematic exhibitions invite the user to explore nature and find new meaning in unexpectedly surprising places.

- Karen Elinich

Very cool site! The navigation is fairly straightforward and fun. The content is engaging and interesting. The underground gallery was particularly interesting, especially for it's placement of a human to show scale of the caves.

- David Greenfield

This is an interesting site with many good web-technical features.

- Joan C. Nordbotten

Honorable Mention:

Van Gogh Gauguin experience
http://www.vangoghgauguin.com

Judges Comments:

This is a lovely site with well integrated use of visual effects, text, and music.

- Joan C. Nordbotten

An example of an innovative use of existing web technology. I felt the same way that I feel when I visit art museums -- intrigued, a little confused, a bit lost, not quite sure what to do, inclined toward enchantment, and fascinated by the world of art, artists, and artistry.
